Kamchatka - Sled Dog Adventures

5 days/4 nights

Day 1: Petropavlovsk - Nalychevo
Arrival in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski. Meeting and outfitting. After you have settled in and get fully outfitted, you will be taken on a tour around the lodge premises and dog kennel grounds. Experienced guides will brief you on our dogs’ profiles: their bloodlines, ages, racing qualities, their parts in a team, as well as general dog keeping, training and breeding requirements. Our guides and sled dog mushers will set up and fix a sled dog team, meaning, “harness a dog team for a start”, while explaining all the tricky bits of the process.

After receiving instruction on sled dog team driving (or “mushing”) techniques, safety precautions and trail condition, you will go on your sled dog trip of a lifetime, with our experienced sled dog mushers/guides. The carefully selected and marked trail will take you to the magnificent Kamchatka scenery preserved in its absolute purity in the suburbs of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski and foothills of our “home” volcanoes - Avachinskiy, Koryakskiy and Kozelskiy.

The sled will be escorted by Buran-type snowmobiles (1-2, depending on the group size) equipped with a comfortable passenger sled, able to carry 4-5 passengers. The distance of the trail is 300 kilometers (190 miles). During the trip every guest will try his hand as a sled dog team driver (“musher”).

When arrive in the Srednee Nalychevo Lodge after dinner you will have an opportunity to relax in Russian sauna called “banya”. Overnight stay at the Srednee Nalychevo Lodge.

Day 2: Nalychevo National Preserve
The following morning after breakfast, the dog team will be harnessed and you will follow a route to the most picturesque place in Kamchatka, Nalychevo Nature Preserve. In 1996 this preserve was included in the UNESCO heritage list because of its active volcanoes, hot & cold mineral springs, Erman birch forests, high mountain grasses, pure rivers and lakes. In the park you will have the opportunity to bathe in natural thermal springs and do some cross-country skiing. There are more than 200 mineral springs in the Nalycheva valley. The waters of the springs are a renowned for their medicinal qualities. Overnight stay in Nalychevo Nature Preserve.
Day 3: Leisure day in Nalychevo
Breakfast. The whole day will be at leisure for you to enjoy Kamchatka. Free time for walking, hot springs bathing, cross-country skiing. Lunch. Free time. Dinner. Overnight stay.
Day 4: Nalychevo National Preserve - Nalychevo Lodge.
The following morning after breakfast the sled dog team will be harnessed and you will start back to the Srednee Nalychevo Lodge with short stops for a snack (snowmobile and passenger sled escort). Day 5: Nalychevo - Petropavlovsk
In the morning after breakfast the sled dog team and the guests will follow their way back to the Siberian K9 Kennel and Lodge. Short stop for a snack (snowmobile and passenger sled escort). During the dinner you will learn more about the sled dog sport, its history and sled dog breeding. Topical photo albums, literature about the natural parks and nature preserves in Kamchatka will be there for your perusal.
